- Completion of the action plan for the clean-up project Svolvær harbor has for a long time been an important hub for fishing activity and boat traffic in the region. There have been businesses in the harbor such as shipyards, workshops, coal depots and bunkering facility. In addition to runoff from waste landfills and buildings, the aforementioned businesses have led to the discharge of environmental toxins into the harbour. Environmental surveys carried out between 1990 and 2025 have shown that the sediments in Svolvær Harbor are partly heavily contaminated by metals and organic pollutants. The investigations in the harbor have shown heavily polluted seabed. In the surface samples (0-30 cm), contents of TBT, copper, mercury and several PAH compounds corresponding to condition class V (very poor environmental condition) have been detected as well as TBT, copper, mercury, PCB-7 and several PAH compounds corresponding to condition class IV (poor environmental condition). This is the situation in large parts of the action area in Svolvær harbour. There is an action plan for the clean-up project, drawn up in 2020 and several surveys conducted after that. The purpose of the action plan was to prepare concrete measures to clean up contaminated sediments, and thereby reduce the risk of pollution in the short and long term. Planned measures are a combination of dredging and covering up. The defined environmental goal in the action plan is to achieve condition class III.
