Mapping of carbon-rich land in Trondheim municipality
By having such an overview, the municipality will have a better opportunity to take care of such areas in spatial planning. The mapping must also look at which areas, when restored, have the potential to become valuable areas for carbon sequestration and carbon storage. Preserving and restoring the natural carbon stores will increase CO₂ absorption and contribute to climate neutrality by offsetting other emissions that are difficult to cut. Simultaneous the natural diversity and other natural assets linked to the areas are safeguarded. Like several municipalities, Trondheim has in recent years had a map of recoverable nature in the municipality. The knowledge of carbon in the soil has been investigated and a new forest assessment with an updated numerical basis will soon be completed. It is natural that these reports is used as part of the knowledge base. The data base from this assignment must be able to be included as part of the municipal land and nature accounts.
